📜 History of Tirumala Temple

Tirumala has a very ancient religious tradition. According to the temple's sacred tradition, Lord Venkateswara made Tirumala his abode in the present age, while Sri Bhu Varaha Swamy is regarded as the earlier divine resident of the hill.

The temple developed over many centuries, with successive rulers and devotees contributing to its architecture and expansion. The present complex contains structures, mandapams, entrances and inscriptions reflecting several periods of South Indian history.

The TTD history records important developments associated with different dynasties and rulers, including the Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas and Vijayanagara rulers.

The Vijayanagara period, particularly the reign of Sri Krishnadevaraya, played an important role in the development and patronage of the Tirumala temple.

The temple's history is therefore not limited to one period; it represents centuries of religious devotion, royal patronage and architectural development.

🕉️ Sthala Puranam – Legend of Lord Venkateswara

The sacred legends of Tirumala are found in several Puranic traditions, including references associated with the Varaha Purana, Padma Purana, Garuda Purana, Brahmanda Purana, Markandeya Purana and other sacred texts.

According to the traditional legend, Tirumala was originally associated with Adi Varaha Swamy.

Lord Srinivasa later sought permission from Sri Varahaswami to reside on the sacred hill. In accordance with the traditional belief, devotees are expected to first offer worship to Sri Bhu Varaha Swamy before proceeding to the main shrine of Lord Venkateswara. TTD continues to preserve this tradition.

Another important part of the Tirumala tradition is the story of Sri Srinivasa and Goddess Padmavati. The divine marriage of Srinivasa with Padmavati is celebrated as Srinivasa Kalyanam and forms an important part of Tirumala's religious tradition.

Ghanta Mandapam

The Ghanta Mandapam, also called Mahamani Mandapam, was constructed in 1461 AD and is an important part of the historic temple complex.
