📜 History of Srikalahasti Temple

Srikalahasti is regarded as an ancient Shaiva pilgrimage centre. The temple's official history records references to Tamil Shaiva saints who visited the shrine during the 2nd and 3rd centuries, while surviving inscriptions include Chola-period inscriptions dating to around the 10th century CE.

The temple underwent development under several South Indian dynasties. The official temple history describes contributions associated with the Pallavas, Cholas, Yadavas and Vijayanagara rulers.

The Vijayanagara period was particularly significant. Sri Krishnadevaraya is associated with major additions to the temple, including the huge gopuram and mandapam structures. The temple's official history records the construction of a major gopuram in 1516 during his reign.

The temple's location between hills and the Swarnamukhi River also strongly influenced its architecture. The temple complex follows the contours of the adjoining hill, resulting in an unusual and somewhat irregular plan.

🕉️ Sthala Puranam

Srikalahasti has several important legends associated with Lord Shiva.

🕷️🐍🐘 The Legend of Sri, Kala and Hasti

The most famous legend concerns three devotees of Lord Shiva:

  • Sri – the spider
  • Kala – the serpent
  • Hasti – the elephant

According to the temple tradition, all three worshipped the Shiva Lingam in their own way.

The spider protected the Lingam by creating a web around it.

The serpent offered precious gems to the Lord.

The elephant brought water from the river and performed worship with water and flowers.

Because of their different forms of worship, conflict eventually arose between the three devotees. Their unwavering devotion ultimately led to divine grace from Lord Shiva.

The name Sri-Kala-Hasti is traditionally associated with these three devotees.

🌬️ Legend of the Vayu Lingam

Another important tradition connects the shrine with Lord Vayu, the deity of wind.

According to the temple's sacred tradition, Vayu performed intense penance to Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva blessed Vayu and the sacred Lingam came to be associated with the Vayu element.

This is why Srikalahasti represents Air/Vayu among the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams.

🌺 Legend of Gnana Prasunambika

The temple tradition also associates Goddess Parvati with a penance performed at Srikalahasti.

After completing her penance, she received the grace of Lord Shiva and came to be worshipped here as Gnana Prasunambika, associated with divine knowledge.

🏹 Bhakta Kannappa

Srikalahasti is also strongly associated with Bhakta Kannappa, one of the most celebrated devotees of Lord Shiva.

Kannappa's devotion is traditionally described as completely selfless and beyond formal ritual. His story has become an important part of Srikalahasti's spiritual identity.

The temple's official history notes the association of Adi Shankara's Sivananda Lahari with the story of Kannappa.

🔱 Main Deity – Sri Kalahasteeswara Swamy

The presiding deity is Sri Kalahasteeswara Swamy, worshipped as the Vayu Lingam.

The temple tradition identifies the Lingam with the element of air and considers it a sacred manifestation of Lord Shiva.

Goddess Gnana Prasunambika

The divine consort is worshipped as:

Sri Gnana Prasunambika Devi

She is associated with knowledge, wisdom and divine grace.

The temple complex also contains shrines dedicated to other deities including Sri Kalabhairava Swamy, Sri Subramanya Swamy, Lord Ganesha and other forms of Shiva and Parvati.

🏛️ Temple Architecture

Sri Kalahasteeswara Temple is a magnificent example of South Indian temple architecture developed over several centuries.

One of its most distinctive features is its location beside the hill and the Swarnamukhi River.

The temple is west-facing, and the adjoining hills form part of the natural setting of the complex. The temple's prakarams follow the contours of the hill.

Major Architectural Features

  • Main gopuram
  • Several prakarams
  • Mandapams
  • Inner sanctum
  • Gnana Prasunambika shrine
  • Underground Ganesha shrine

The temple's official history records that Krishnadevaraya built a major gopuram in 1516, while the temple complex also contains structures associated with earlier periods.
